How does TMS work?TMS utilizes technology similar to that in MRI machines. By resting a specialized magnetic coil on the patient's head, small pulses can be targeting into the specific brain areas that underlie depression and anxiety. These pulses activate nerve cells, which has a cascading affect on the brain--improving communication across neural networks.
-
Is TMS covered by insurance? For patients that meet criteria, most major insurance companies will cover TMS for depression. This is because of the overwhelming evidence of improvement with TMS. We have experience with most insurance carriers and will gather all of the necessary information to submit the authorization for coverage on your behalf.
-
What are the side effects of TMS?The most common side effects of TMS are scalp tenderness at the site of the magnetic pulses or headaches that can be treated with over-the-counter medication. Most often these pains go away after the first week of treatment. There is a very small risk of seizures but less than that of using antidepressant medication (1 person per 60,000 treatment sessions). Our skilled providers help patients understand the process and feel confident navigating the changes throughout the TMS process.
-
How is TMS different from antidepressants?Studies show that only 10-15% of patients will improve with antidepressants if they have already tried two or three medications. In contrast, 60-80% of patients treated with TMS will improve significantly or go into full remission. Antidepressants work by modifying the chemicals in the brain, not the activity of the neurons. TMS magnetic pulses result in increased activity, improved connections, and increased growth between brain cells. Antidepressants may have side effects such as cramping, diarrhea, weight gain, or impaired sexual function. Furthermore, some patients have other allergic reactions to the medicines. TMS is chemical-free so there are no systemic adverse effects.
-
Is TMS like "shock" therapy? Is it painful?TMS is completely different than ECT or "shock" therapy. TMS is non-invasive and not painful. There are no needles, tissue damage or memory loss and patients can go about their normal activities immediately after the session, including driving. TMS does not use electric current on the brain like ECT. It uses magnetic pulses which change the activity of the neurotransmitters in a small, target spot in the brain. TMS is an outpatient procedure that requires no medication or sedation, and there is no long term negative side effects.
